Did itemus
put the I in Internet? When you normally think of an Internet operating company the first thing that comes to mind is, "it’s just another dotcom", but itemus inc. ("itemus") is aiming changing to that view. With offices in Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver, itemus and it’s CEO James "Jim" Tobin (formerly of BCE and BCE Emergis) has ventured to take the road less traveled in the Canadian technology scene — creating a new hybrid of a software developer, service provider and venture investor. Usually these three segments are separate entities with few companies attempting to take a leadership role in all three. This is what sets itemus apart from it’s competitors in Canada and to some extent in the US. Another difference between itemus and it’s competitors are it’s attempts to reach out into the technology community in Canada with it’s unique brand of people networking called ideasON TAP where anyone with an Internet idea can pitch their concept to itemus and mingle with like minded people. These events keep itemus in touch with the community which it serves and provides itemus with ideas and concept which help keep the company fresh and "on top" of innovative ideas. As a software developer and service provider, itemus with it’s subsidiary itemus Solutions and portfolio companies, are able to provide development tools, applications, and services, to both itemus portfolio companies and external clients which seek professional next generation solutions but are not part of the itemus family of companies. Within it’s venture portfolio, itemus concentrates on specific areas of development, namely, advanced networking, applications management, mobile commerce, rich media, and security solutions (See itemus Snapshot). All of which itemus provides capital, leadership, and integrated services to. In other words, itemus doesn’t just provide a company with much needed capital, but makes it part of the itemus family. The future of itemus is uncertain, but not for lack of trying on itemus’s part, but because of the nature of the market beast. At the peak of the market euphoria, itemus’s share price rocketed to a lofty 52-week high of C $4.83 only to be humbled back to a C $0.80. Although most public companies would like to think that "it’s business as usual" regardless of it’s market share price, itemus’s ability to make acquisitions and raise capital for it’s ventures is dependent, more so than other companies, on it’s ability to retain investor confidence. With this in mind, investors should remember that although the story may be good, itemus still has to prove that it not only has good management and good ideas, but has the ability to turn a profit for it’s shareholders. With the recently announced acquisition by itemus for the revenue producing New York based rich media company Shooting Star Inc., itemus could be on it’s way. So, did itemus put the I in Internet? Probably
not, but there’s always Internet 2.0. |
